In August 2009, 60 residents ensconced themselves into Sweet Briar’s GreenVillage, the first new student housing to be built in more than 50 years. Phase one of the $3.5 million project was completed in just over nine months. The five-building, three-unit complex consist of a first-floor handicapped accessible apartment and two townhouse-style apartments occupying the top two floors. As one of the charter signatories of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, Sweet Briar’s goal was to provide apartment-style housing for students in an eco-friendly way.
Each furnished unit is approximately 1,600 square feet with four single bedrooms, two full baths, a full kitchen, dining room, living area, flat screen TV, washer and dryer. Designed for energy and cost-effective maintenance, the village is outfitted with low-flow showers and toilets, structural insulated panels (which are 40 – 50 percent more efficient than stick-built homes), Energy Star appliances, high R-Value windows, tankless water heaters, and an Energy Star-rated roof (designed to accommodate photovoltaic solar electric panels).
